As part of my objective in exploring streaming media, I'm interested in home entertainment servers as well. I started off with a Toshiba SG-10 a few years ago, a little "server-in-a-box" device that was (and is) being used by folks to serve streaming media wirelessly to a home network. But, of course, you had to basically add the streaming and wireless functionality yourself since the SG-10 only offered a RedHat Linux operating system with a number of standard server apps like Apache and sendmail built-in.
Nowadays, the fight for the home entertainment center is going on hot and heavy. Not too surprisingly, a number of appliances are coming out that enable home users to stream multimedia throughout the home. Here's a very good blog article on some of the recent developments in the area, by Frank Steele. I wasn't aware of the Axentra NetBox, it's an awesome looking device.
Since Frank wrote his article, the NetBox was judged "Best of Show" in the Smart Home category at this year's CES (Consumer Electronics Show) in Las Vegas.
